Chapter 11
âI canât believe it,â Paula wailed. âCorey Barton and Eloise Ellington. Who would have thought those two would get together?â
After she left Eloiseâs house, Julia called Paula and asked her to pick up Bridget. She wanted to arrange a meeting to discuss everything she had discovered since seeing them earlier in the day.
âAnd so soon after Morrisâ death?â Bridget chimed in.
âWhoâs to say this was the first time they hooked up?â Julia questioned.
âAre you thinking the two of them were having an affair?â
âI donât know, Paula. I know I didnât see Coreyâs truck anywhere on the street when I left Eloiseâs house. That makes me think they were trying to hide the fact that he was there from everyone.â
âYou said Detective Evans told you that Eloise and Corey were suspects, right?â Bridget asked.
âHe did.â
âDid he mention an affair? Or why they were suspects,â Paula added.
âI donât think the detective knows about the affair. He said that Corey was a suspect because he had threatened Morris. He then told me that Eloiseâs neighbors heard her and Morris arguing and that she'd threatened to âchop off certain parts of his anatomyâ a few days before he died.â
âAre you going to tell the police about what you saw at Eloiseâs tonight?â
âOh, Iâm not sure if I should, Bridget. We donât know if they were having an affair before Morris died. What I saw could have been something brand new. I wouldnât want to accuse someone until I have proof they did something wrong.â
The three women sat silently for several minutes before anyone spoke.
âSo, who do you think this Mr. V is, and why was Morris meeting with him so much?â Paula finally broke the silence.
âI think I know where we can find out.â
The gleam in Juliaâs eye made her friends groan involuntarily.
âWhat?â
âNothing, we just know that look you have when you come up with one of your schemes. Right, Bridget?â
âIt usually means weâre not going to like what youâre thinking of getting us into.â
Julia snorted in mock offense. âMy plans arenât that bad.â
âNot always, but sometimes you act before you think, and that can get you and us in trouble.â
âDoes that mean you are going to let me go alone?â Julia asked her friends.
âNo,â the women said in unison.
âGood,â Julia continued. âIâve been thinking about the matchbook I found in Morrisâ office. It was from Luckyâs Strike, and there wasnât just one; there was a whole stack of them. It might even be where he had been meeting Mr. V.â
âWhat makes you think that?â Paula questioned.
âWell, the notations on Morrisâ calendar about the meetings were on Saturday nights at ten oâclock. There were a whole bunch of matchbooks from Luckyâs. What other place do you know is open around here on a Saturday at that time?â
Although they didnât want to admit it, Juliaâs explanation sounded reasonable. The only problem was that Luckyâs Strike wasnât the most prestigious place in Merrimount. In fact, it wasnât much more than a seedy bar where locals who didnât mind rubbing elbows with shady characters congregated.
